Personal Update (Nov 23 2011):I have resigned from The University of Manchester, and will take up a Senior Lectureship post in imaging at Bangor University, Wales on February 24th 2012.
Hello, Welcome, I am Zengbo Wang (王增波), born in Zhejiang China in 1975, educated in Physics (BSc, MSc, Xiamen Univ, China) and engineering (PhD, NUS, Singapore). I am currently a faculty staff (Lecturer) in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE) at The University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
My expertise lies in the fields of: Optical nanoscopy, Nano-fabrication, Nanoplasmonics, Laser micro nano processing, Laser cleaning and applications, and scientific ethics.
My research on the 'world first 50-nm resolution white light nanoscope' using microsphere superlenses (published in Nature Communications in 2011 as the first and corresponding author, pdf) has attracted wide public interests and media coverage (BBC, New York Times, Daily Mail, Independent, Discovery News, Straight Times (Singapore), Xinhua (China), etc. Google 'microsphere nanoscope' (english) or '纳米级光学显微镜' (chinese) for news reading).
This research had a root connection with my PhD work in Singapore, and the 'Basic Technology project: NANOSCOPE' in Southampton, where I was a research fellow in the project between 2008-09, developing super-resolution nano imaging through various (superoscillation) designs including periodic or quasi-crystal structures, such as a microsphere array (pdf). The idea of nano-imaging with microspheres was further developed and materialized at Manchester University where I was a lecturer in laser micro nano engineering since Mar. 2009.
The white-light nanoscope work has been awarded a first prize in a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) poster (pdf) competition event in nano-engineering, invited as a feature article in Laser Focus World (link) and (pdf), and honored by the research councils UK (RCUK, p34) in 2011 as one of the '50 big ideas for the future' (pdf).
